📌Department
La Libertad (El Salvador). El Zonte is a surf beach on the Costa del Bálsamo, on the Salvadoran Pacific, known worldwide as 'Bitcoin Beach' for having pioneered the use of bitcoin as a means of payment in its local economy, even before El Salvador adopted that cryptocurrency as legal tender. It's a quieter, more relaxed beach than nearby El Tunco, with good waves, nature and a singular story that made it a point of international interest
📌Service city
El Zonte is on the coastal highway (CA-2) of La Libertad, a short distance from El Tunco and the city of La Libertad (service base and fishing port). The larger base is San Salvador, about 50 km away, and El Salvador International Airport (SAL) is relatively close to the coast. The town of El Zonte has hotels, hostels, restaurants and surf schools; for banks and larger shopping, the reference is La Libertad or the capital
📌Best time to visit
El Zonte can be enjoyed year-round thanks to its warm climate. For surfing, the biggest swell season usually coincides with the months of March/May to October. The dry season (November to April) offers sunny, dry days, ideal for the beach and relaxing, with gentler waves. Being a quieter beach than El Tunco, El Zonte is a good option throughout the week for those seeking relaxation, surf and nature away from the bustle
📌Currency
US dollar (USD), the currency in general use in El Salvador. Note a key and current fact: in January 2025 El Salvador reformed its Bitcoin Law (at the request of the IMF) and bitcoin ceased to be legal tender; it's no longer mandatory to accept it. Even so, in El Zonte —the cradle of the 'Bitcoin Beach' project— several businesses still accept it voluntarily through digital wallets (Lightning). Bring cash in dollars in small bills for taxis, pupusas and small purchases (source: Bitcoin Law reform, January 2025; verified July 2026)
📌Suggested days
El Zonte can be visited in a day from El Tunco or San Salvador, but it invites you to stay 2 or 3 nights for its relaxed atmosphere. The essentials: surf or take lessons, enjoy the beach and the sunset, get to know the 'Bitcoin Beach' experience up close, swim in natural rock pools and explore the neighboring beaches of the Costa del Bálsamo. It combines very well with El Tunco and El Sunzal on a tour of the coast

Loading weather…
El Zonte is one of those beaches that combine two very different attractions: on one hand, it's a beautiful surf beach on the Salvadoran Costa del Bálsamo, quiet and surrounded by nature; on the other, it's world-famous as 'Bitcoin Beach', the place where a pioneering experience of using bitcoin as a means of payment was born, which would make headlines around the planet. That mix of relaxed surf and singular history makes it unique.
Unlike nearby, bustling El Tunco, El Zonte has a calmer, more natural atmosphere, ideal for those seeking waves, rest and authenticity without the party. Its streets slope down toward a beach of dark volcanic sand and rocks, with good surf breaks, natural pools to cool off in and spectacular sunsets over the Pacific. The town preserves an air of coastal community, now dotted with cafés, hostels and the mark of the bitcoin experiment.
This guide covers El Zonte with a practical and warm eye: where to surf, what the 'Bitcoin Beach' experience is like, where to watch the sunset, what to do in its surroundings, where to eat and how to combine it with El Tunco and the rest of the Costa del Bálsamo. It's a perfect destination for anyone who wants surf, nature, tranquility and, along the way, a glimpse of one of the most curious and talked-about stories in El Salvador.
📖 History of El Zonte (Bitcoin Beach)
El Zonte was, like other beaches of the Costa del Bálsamo (the coastal strip of La Libertad, named for the balsam extracted from its range), a small coastal community dedicated to fishing and little known outside the region. Its transformation came by two paths. First, like the neighboring beaches (El Tunco, El Sunzal), El Zonte began to attract surfers for the quality of its waves, gradually developing an offering of hostels, surf schools and restaurants. But what made it world-famous was the 'Bitcoin Beach' project: toward the end of the 2010s, a community initiative began to promote the use of bitcoin as a means of payment in the local economy of El Zonte, financed by an anonymous donation in that cryptocurrency and aimed at the financial inclusion of a community with little access to traditional banking. Businesses, vendors and residents began to accept and use bitcoin for everyday transactions, in an experiment that drew international attention. This local El Zonte experience was one of the antecedents cited when El Salvador adopted, in September 2021, bitcoin as legal tender at the national level, becoming the first country in the world to do so. That national policy was reversed in January 2025 —pressured by the IMF, bitcoin ceased to be legal tender—, but El Zonte, nicknamed 'Bitcoin Beach', remained forever tied to that chapter: it's still a pilgrimage point for cryptocurrency enthusiasts and a symbol of that bet, in addition to a beloved surf beach. The full history is on our history page.

The beach and the waves of El Zonte
A surf beach of dark sand and rocks, quieter than El Tunco, with good breaks and sunsets.
El Zonte's beach is the heart of the place: a strip of dark sand of volcanic origin, dotted with rocks and pools, open to the Pacific, with good waves that have made it a beloved destination for surfers. Its atmosphere is quieter and more natural than that of nearby El Tunco, which makes it ideal for those seeking surf and beach without the bustle of the more party-oriented spots.
El Zonte's waves break over rocky and sandy bottoms, and offer conditions for surfers of different levels, with local schools and guides who give lessons and rent equipment. Beyond surfing, the beach invites you to walk, sunbathe, cool off in its natural pools (when the tide allows) and, above all, enjoy the sunset, one of the great moments of the day along this whole coast.
As on other beaches of the Costa del Bálsamo, it's best to be careful when swimming because of the rocks and currents, and to find out locally about the best areas and tide times. The natural beauty and calm of El Zonte are its great appeal, together with its famous 'bitcoin' facet.
ℹ️ Distance: In the town of El Zonte, on the coastal highway (on foot) · Best time: Sunset for the atmosphere; surf season depending on the swell · Admission: Free (public beach) · Duration: Half a day or more

The 'Bitcoin Beach' experience
Getting to know up close the pioneering bitcoin-use project that made El Zonte world-famous.
El Zonte's great distinctive feature is its world fame as 'Bitcoin Beach'. Here, around 2019, a community initiative driven by the American Mike Peterson —from an anonymous donation of about US$ 100,000 in bitcoin— began to promote the use of the cryptocurrency in the local economy, in an experiment of financial inclusion for a community with little access to traditional banking. Businesses, vendors and residents began to accept bitcoin for everyday transactions via Lightning wallets, and the case of El Zonte went around the world.
For the visitor interested in the subject, El Zonte offers the chance to experience it: paying at some businesses with bitcoin, learning how it works in practice and understanding the history of the project through the community itself, the signs and the participating businesses. It's one of those places where a global technological trend is seen applied in a small beach community.
A key fact so as not to leave with an outdated impression: the El Zonte experience was one of the antecedents cited when El Salvador became, in September 2021, the first country in the world to adopt bitcoin as legal tender. However, in January 2025, pressured by the IMF, the country reformed the law and bitcoin ceased to be legal tender: its use became voluntary. In practice, in El Zonte payment in bitcoin was never the majority and today it's an option rather than an obligation; getting to know 'Bitcoin Beach' remains a glimpse of a singular chapter of the country's recent history.
ℹ️ Distance: In the town of El Zonte (on foot) · Best time: Year-round (find out which businesses accept bitcoin) · Admission: Free (it's a town experience, not a site with an entrance fee) · Duration: As long as the stroll / shopping takes

Surf and lessons in El Zonte
El Zonte's waves and its surf schools, ideal for learning or improving in a relaxed atmosphere.
Surfing is, along with bitcoin, El Zonte's great attraction. Its waves, which break over rocky and sandy bottoms, are part of the set of excellent breaks of the Salvadoran Costa del Bálsamo, and attract surfers seeking a quieter atmosphere than that of El Tunco. The beach offers conditions for different levels and a relaxed setting to enjoy the sport.
In the town there are surf schools and local guides that offer lessons for beginners (from about US$ 20–35 for a 1 to 2-hour lesson with board included; verified July 2026), sessions to improve your level and board rentals (approx. US$ 10–15 per day), plus information on the best hours and conditions depending on the tide and the swell. Learning to surf in El Zonte, with its calm atmosphere, is a highly recommended experience for beginners, while experienced surfers enjoy its waves with fewer people in the water.
Beyond surfing, this coast lets you combine several beaches on a single trip, going from El Zonte to El Sunzal and El Tunco, each with its character. El Zonte contributes the quiet, natural note of the trio.
ℹ️ Distance: Waves in front of the town of El Zonte · Best time: Biggest swell approx. Mar/May to Oct (check conditions) · Admission: Surfing is free; surf lesson US$ 20–35 (1–2 h; verified July 2026) · Duration: 1-2 h for a lesson; as long as you want to surf

Sunset and natural pools
The sunset over the Pacific and the rock pools to cool off in when the tide goes out.
Like all of the Costa del Bálsamo, El Zonte offers spectacular sunsets over the Pacific Ocean. As the evening falls, the beach fills with a golden light and the sky is tinged with oranges and pinks, a perfect moment to sit on the sand, on the rocks or at a bar with a view to contemplate the sunset. In El Zonte's quiet atmosphere, the sunset is experienced in a more serene and natural way than at the busier spots.
A particular attraction of this beach is its natural pools: when the tide goes out, small natural seawater pools form among the rocks where it's possible to cool off more calmly than in the open surf. It's a pleasant option, especially for those seeking a quieter swim, though it's always best to be careful with the rocks and check the tide times locally.
The combination of sunset, pools and relaxed atmosphere makes El Zonte an ideal place to disconnect. Many visitors choose to stay several nights precisely for that atmosphere of calm facing the sea.
ℹ️ Distance: On El Zonte beach (on foot) · Best time: Sunset year-round; pools at low tide · Admission: Free (public beach) · Duration: 1 to 2 hours

Neighboring beaches of the Costa del Bálsamo
El Tunco, El Sunzal and other nearby beaches, easy to combine for touring the Salvadoran surf coast.
El Zonte is part of the Costa del Bálsamo, the strip of surf beaches of the La Libertad coastline, so it's an excellent base for exploring the neighboring beaches and putting together a complete tour of the Salvadoran surf coast. Each beach has its personality, and the proximity between them lets you combine them without difficulty.
The most famous is El Tunco, the best-known beach destination in El Salvador, with its iconic rock, its crowded sunset and its lively nightlife; it's the party and bustling note of the coast. Very close is El Sunzal, renowned for its long, gentler wave, ideal for intermediate surfers and for learning, with a more relaxed atmosphere. And, of course, El Zonte contributes the calm, the nature and its famous bitcoin facet.
Touring these beaches —whether by staying at one and taking excursions to the others, or moving along the coast— lets you get to know the different faces of the Salvadoran Pacific: world-class surf, backpacker atmosphere, party, tranquility and natural beauty. The coastal highway connects all these spots, and bus 80 links El Sunzal, El Tunco and La Libertad for about US$ 0.25–0.35.
ℹ️ Distance: El Tunco and El Sunzal a short distance away via the coastal highway · Best time: Year-round; surf season depending on the swell · Admission: Free (public beaches); paid services and lessons · Duration: Half a day to a day each

La Libertad and its Boardwalk / Port
The fishing port and the renovated Boardwalk of La Libertad, with a seafood market and pier.
A few kilometers from El Zonte, the city of La Libertad is the coast's service center and an attraction in itself. Its renovated Boardwalk (Port of La Libertad), remodeled as part of the 'Surf City' project, offers a seafront promenade, restaurants, play areas and a historic pier where the day's catch is unloaded.
The great must-see is the pier's seafood market: fishermen sell fresh fish, shrimp, lobsters and seafood directly, and several eateries prepare them on the spot. It's one of the best places on the coast to eat seafood at a good price, with a shrimp cocktail or fried fish for about US$ 6–15.
La Libertad also concentrates banks, pharmacies, supermarkets and transport connections, so it's worth keeping it as a reference for any errand during your stay in El Zonte.
ℹ️ Distance: About 12–15 km from El Zonte via the coastal highway · Best time: Morning for the seafood market; sunset for the Boardwalk · Admission: Free (Boardwalk and pier with public access) · Duration: Half a day

❓ Frequently asked questions
What is 'Bitcoin Beach' and why is El Zonte famous?+
El Zonte is known worldwide as 'Bitcoin Beach' because, around 2019, a community initiative (driven by Mike Peterson after an anonymous donation in bitcoin) promoted there the use of the cryptocurrency as a means of payment, in an experiment of financial inclusion. Businesses and residents began to accept bitcoin and the case gained international fame. It was one of the antecedents cited when El Salvador adopted bitcoin as legal tender in September 2021, a decision the country reversed in January 2025 (bitcoin is no longer legal tender, its use is voluntary).
How much does a surf lesson in El Zonte cost?+
A surf lesson for beginners costs approximately US$ 20–35 per person (verified July 2026), lasting 1 to 2 hours with the board included; a standalone board rental runs about US$ 10–15 per day. There are schools like Esencia Nativa and Puro Surf, plus independent instructors. It's best to confirm the price on arrival, since it varies by instructor and season.
Can I pay for everything in bitcoin in El Zonte?+
No: bitcoin is an option, not the norm. Since January 2025 it ceased to be legal tender in El Salvador (a reform requested by the IMF) and its acceptance is voluntary. In El Zonte, the cradle of the 'Bitcoin Beach' project, several businesses still accept it via Lightning wallets —more than in the rest of the country—, but the US dollar is the currency in general use and it's best to bring cash in dollars. If you want to pay in bitcoin, download a Lightning wallet beforehand and keep the fees in mind.
How is El Zonte different from El Tunco?+
El Tunco is the most famous and bustling beach destination, with intense nightlife and crowded sunsets. El Zonte is quieter and more natural, ideal for those seeking surf, rest and authenticity without the party, plus its singular 'Bitcoin Beach' facet. They're close (about 10–15 minutes) and combine very well.
How do I get to El Zonte and how much does it cost?+
It's on the coastal highway of La Libertad, about 50 km from San Salvador (1 hour by car). From the airport (SAL), a shared shuttle costs US$ 15–25 per person and a private taxi US$ 35–50. From San Salvador, the bus costs US$ 1–2 (cash, with a transfer in La Libertad) and the taxi/app US$ 30–45. From El Tunco or La Libertad it's 15–30 minutes (bus from US$ 0.35).
How do you pay for the bus in El Zonte and is there an app to locate it?+
The coastal bus (routes 192 and 80) is paid IN CASH to the conductor, in dollars and with the amount announced on a sign inside the bus (US$ 0.35–1 per leg, verified July 2026); there's no rechargeable card or QR on the coast. The old SITRAMSS/SUBES card of San Salvador fell into disuse, and the new bus system with electronic payment and GPS (launched in 2025) is for the capital's metropolitan area, not the coast. To see routes and approximate schedules, Google Maps and Moovit cover the San Salvador–La Libertad axis; on the beach the practical thing is to flag the bus with your hand from the highway. For ride apps, InDrive works in El Salvador (and Uber/DiDi mainly in the capital).
Can you swim calmly in El Zonte?+
You have to be careful: the beach has rocks, surf and currents. When the tide goes out, natural pools form among the rocks, where it's possible to cool off more calmly. It's best to find out locally about the best areas and tide times, use footwear in the stony areas and enter the water with caution.
Is El Zonte safe?+
El Zonte is a quiet, established tourist destination, used to receiving international visitors drawn by the surf and bitcoin. As at any beach destination, common sense is best: watch your belongings, don't leave items unattended on the sand and check for updated safety recommendations locally.
