Olón is Montañita's quiet neighbor: they share almost everything —the same coastline, the same stretch of the Ruta del Spondylus, barely a hill between them— but their personalities are opposites. While Montañita means partying, surfing and nightlife, Olón offers a long golden-sand beach, a more relaxed and family-friendly feel, and the option of resting by day and, if you feel like it, having Montañita's party scene a few minutes away at night.

Its great pride is the beach: some 7 kilometers of golden sand —one of the longest on mainland Ecuador's coast—, perfect for long walks, for surfing without the crowds and for sunsets over the Pacific. And its most famous image is the Santuario Blanca Estrella de la Mar, a church shaped like a sailboat perched on the hill that separates Olón from Montañita, with a stunning view of the sea and the coast: a place of pilgrimage and a must-see.

This guide covers Olón with a practical eye: how to get there along the Ruta del Spondylus, what to do (beach, surfing, the sanctuary, sunsets), how to make the most of being close to Montañita and Ayampe, and how to use it as a quiet base for exploring the beaches and Parque Nacional Machalilla on the Ecuadorian coast.

📖 History of Olón

Olón is a coastal commune in the province of Santa Elena, in an area inhabited since pre-Columbian times by the seafaring peoples of the Ecuadorian shoreline, tied to the spondylus trade that gives the coastal route its name. Like many villages on the peninsula, it was for a long time a quiet fishing town. Its tourist history is closely bound to that of its neighbor Montañita: when Montañita became, from the late 20th century, the great magnet for surfing and partying on the Ecuadorian coast, Olón began to receive the travelers looking for a quieter, more family-friendly alternative, keeping its long stretch of sand and its serene atmosphere. The Santuario Blanca Estrella de la Mar, inaugurated in 1984 on top of the hill that separates it from Montañita, established itself as a place of devotion and a symbol of the village. The full story is on our history page.

🗺️ What to see

1
Olón beach
A long golden-sand beach, one of the longest in the area, quieter and more family-friendly than Montañita.
Olón beach is the village's main draw and one of the longest on the whole mainland coast of Ecuador: some 7 kilometers of golden sand, wide and open to the Pacific, inviting hours-long walks along the shore. Its biggest difference from neighboring Montañita is the atmosphere: here everything is calmer, more relaxed and more family-friendly, without the intense scene and the crowds of the resort town next door. That width and calm make it ideal for all sorts of plans: spending the day with the family, walking, sunbathing, surfing with fewer people than in Montañita, playing in the sand and enjoying the sunsets, which over this open beach tend to be spectacular. There are beach services, places to stay and restaurants along the seafront, but the general pace is unhurried. Because of its length, the beach never feels as packed as others in the area, even in high season. Getting there: it is steps from the village, reachable on foot. Best time to go: beach season (December to April) for more sun; any time of year for the quiet. Tips: because it is open sea, swim with care and pay attention to the surf and the currents; bring sunscreen and water. The sunsets are not to be missed.
ℹ️ Distance: Steps from the village (reachable on foot) · Best time to go: December to April for more sun; any time of year for the quiet · Admission: Free (public beach) · Duration: Half a day or more
2
Santuario Blanca Estrella de la Mar
The sailboat-shaped church on the hill that separates Olón from Montañita, with spectacular views of the Pacific.
The Santuario Blanca Estrella de la Mar is Olón's most famous image and a place that combines devotion and landscape in a unique way. It is a church shaped like a boat or sailing ship, built on top of the hill that separates Olón from Montañita, dedicated to the Virgin as 'Star of the Sea', protector of fishermen and sailors. It was inaugurated on 8 September 1984, and its ship-like silhouette leaning out over the ocean turned it into one of the most photographed viewpoints on the entire coast. Climbing up to the sanctuary rewards you with a stunning panoramic view: the long beach of Olón stretching to the horizon, the immense Pacific and the coastline of the area. It is at once a place of pilgrimage and prayer for the faithful —many fishermen and locals hold it in special veneration— and an unmissable tourist stop for its views, especially beautiful at sunset. One key practical point: the historic access from Olón is closed because of landslides, so today you go up from the Montañita side, from the Monumento al Surfista. The easiest way is to take a mototaxi (around US$ 1.50) that drops you at the top; you can also walk up with some effort. Getting there: from the Monumento al Surfista (Montañita side), by mototaxi or on foot. Best time to go: at sunset for the best light. Tips: bring comfortable shoes, water and a camera; respect the religious character of the place (it is a working sanctuary).
ℹ️ Distance: On the hill between Olón and Montañita; the climb starts at the Monumento al Surfista (Montañita side) · Best time to go: Sunset for the best light and views; any day · Admission: Free access (working sanctuary); mototaxi up ~US$ 1.50 (verified July 2026) · Duration: 1 to 2 hours (with the climb and the views)
3
Surfing in Olón
Waves in a calmer setting than Montañita, ideal for learning and for surfing without the crowds.
Although Montañita is the undisputed surf capital of the area, its neighbor Olón also has good waves, with the advantage of a far more relaxed and less crowded setting. Olón's long beach has surfable waves, and that makes it attractive both for beginners who want to learn without the pressure of a packed line-up and for surfers who prefer waves with fewer people around. In the village and the surrounding area there are surf schools, lessons for all levels and board rental, making the most of the beach's conditions. Being close to Montañita and other spots on the Ruta del Spondylus also lets you move around looking for the day's best conditions, combining the calm of Olón with the more famous points nearby. The surf scene is present in Olón, but in a quieter form than in its neighbor. How to do it: with local schools and operators, or on your own with a rented board. Best time to go: the waves work according to the swell; check conditions. Tips: if you are a beginner, take lessons and ask locals about the currents; use a leash and sunscreen. For more demanding waves, experience and caution are needed.
ℹ️ Distance: On Olón beach (steps from the village) · Best time to go: Depends on the swell; check conditions · Admission: Group lesson US$ 15–25 (1.5–2 h, board included); board rental US$ 5–10 per hour (verified July 2026) · Duration: 1-2 h for a lesson; variable
4
Right next to Montañita
Montañita's scene, bars and surf a few minutes away, ideal for pairing a quiet day with a lively night.
One of Olón's great advantages is how close it is to Montañita, separated only by a hill and a few minutes of road. That gives you the best of both worlds: staying and spending the day in the calm of Olón, with its family beach and its relaxed pace, and then, if you want, crossing over to Montañita to enjoy its famous nightlife, its bars, its music and its party atmosphere, and coming back to sleep in the quiet of Olón. Montañita is one of the most famous party and surf destinations in Ecuador and in South America, with a scene that runs until dawn, especially in high season and on public holidays. For many travelers the ideal combination is exactly that: the serenity of Olón as a base and Montañita as an optional night out. Being so close also makes it easy to share services, transport and activities between the two villages. Getting there: to Montañita from Olón in a few minutes on foot (part of the way), by mototaxi or taxi. Best time to go: any time of year; Montañita's scene is most intense in summer and on public holidays. Tips: if you go to Montañita at night, carry little cash, look after your things and arrange your way back; by day, both beaches can be walked and explored without any problem.
ℹ️ Distance: Montañita is a few minutes from Olón (on foot, by mototaxi or taxi) · Best time to go: Any time of year; the scene is most intense in summer and on public holidays · Admission: Free (to wander around); cocktails US$ 3–6 and club entry US$ 5–15 in Montañita (verified July 2026) · Duration: A night out; or a daytime stroll

Trips along the Ruta del Spondylus
Olón as a base for Ayampe, Puerto López and Parque Nacional Machalilla, north along the coast.
Olón's location on the Ruta del Spondylus makes it a good starting point for exploring the rest of the coast in the area. To the north, not far away, is Ayampe, the quiet surf and yoga village, ideal for a calm getaway or a day of surfing in a natural setting. And further north you reach Puerto López and Parque Nacional Machalilla, the natural heart of the Manabí coast. From Olón you can organize trips to some of the country's great attractions: Los Frailes beach, considered one of the most beautiful in Ecuador; Isla de la Plata, the 'poor man's Galápagos', with its blue-footed boobies; the community of Agua Blanca, with its archaeological museum and its sulphurous lagoon; and, between June and September, the humpback whale watching that sets out from Puerto López. That connectivity makes Olón a convenient base for combining beach, quiet and nature. Getting there: along the Ruta del Spondylus, by bus, taxi or tour, heading north. Best time to go: June to September for the whales; all year for the beaches and the park. Tips: for Isla de la Plata it is worth booking ahead in season; many tours arrange pick-up from the Montañita/Olón area. Check transport times along the route.
ℹ️ Distance: North along the Ruta del Spondylus (Ayampe, Puerto López, Parque Machalilla) · Best time to go: June to September for whales; all year for the beaches and the park · Admission: Los Frailes free; Agua Blanca US$ 5; Isla de la Plata US$ 30–40 per tour (plus US$ 1 fee, verified July 2026) · Duration: Half a day to a full day depending on the trip

Sunsets and walks on Olón beach
Sunsets over the Pacific from Olón's long beach, one of the village's essential rituals.
Because it faces west and has a wide strip of sand open to the Pacific, Olón delivers some of the prettiest sunsets on the Ruta del Spondylus. Every evening the sky lights up in oranges, pinks and purples as the sun sinks into the sea, and the long beach —practically empty at that hour outside high season— becomes a natural viewpoint kilometers long. What is most characteristic of Olón is that its sands are so wide that they allow very long walks at low tide, when the firm sand spreads out and the horizon seems endless. Walking from one end of the beach to the other as evening falls, with the murmur of the waves and the sky changing color, is one of those simple pleasures that define the Olón experience compared with the bustle of Montañita. Many people also climb up to the cliff of the Santuario de Blanca Estrella del Mar at that hour, because the sunset view over the beach and the sea is even more striking from up there. Others simply sit on the shore with a coconut or a fruit juice bought at the nearby stalls. Getting there: the beach is steps from the village, with free access. Best time to go: all year (the sun sets over the sea); clearer skies in beach season (December to April). Tips: arrive early to get a good spot, bring repellent for the evening and a little cash. The experience is completely free.
ℹ️ Distance: Olón beach, steps from the village (on foot) · Best time to go: All year; clearer skies from December to April · Admission: Free (open access to the beach, verified July 2026) · Duration: 1 to 2 hours (walk and sunset)

📖 History of Olón

Origins, formation and what the sources say.

The pre-Columbian shoreline of the Santa Elena peninsula

The coast where Olón stands today is part of the Santa Elena peninsula, one of the regions with the oldest human history in Ecuador. Thousands of years ago the Las Vegas culture, the country's oldest, lived in the surrounding area, famous for the 'Amantes de Sumpa', a pair of skeletons found in an embrace. Later, cultures such as the Valdivia and the Guangala flourished, and the whole coastal strip was the territory of seafaring and fishing peoples.

These peoples lived facing the sea and took part in the spondylus trade, the red shell considered sacred, which was exchanged all along the Pacific coast and inland into the Andes. That ancient trading circuit gives its name to today's 'Ruta del Spondylus', the axis that now runs along the shoreline and on which Olón sits, alongside Montañita, Ayampe and other beaches.

So, long before the surfers, the hotels and the sanctuary on the cliff, this coast was part of a world of fishermen and sea traders going back millennia. The historical depth of the Santa Elena peninsula —among the oldest on the continent— is the backdrop for a village that, like so many on this shoreline, was born out of the relationship between people and the ocean.

The age of the peninsula
The sources agree that the Santa Elena peninsula holds some of the oldest human settlements in Ecuador (the Las Vegas culture, the Amantes de Sumpa) and was inhabited by successive coastal cultures. The specific relationship between the site of Olón and particular archaeological finds is not especially well documented; what is established is the general pre-Columbian occupation of the region.

Olón, a fishing commune

For most of its history, Olón was a quiet fishing commune on the Santa Elena peninsula. Like so many places along the Ecuadorian shoreline, its daily life revolved around the sea: small-scale fishing, the work of the boats, the relationship with a long golden-sand beach and an unhurried pace, typical of a small coastal village far from the big cities.

The figure of the commune, the traditional form of rural organization in the area, structured life in Olón and in many neighboring places for generations. The long beach, today its main tourist attraction, was then above all the working and living space of a fishing community that drew its livelihood from the sea.

That seafaring identity left marks that endure, such as the devotion to the Virgin as protector of fishermen that would culminate in the Santuario Blanca Estrella de la Mar. Being a quiet, small-scale village, which for a long time kept Olón on the margins of development, would later become one of the traits travelers learned to value, when tourism completely transformed its neighbor Montañita.

Olón's fishing origins
Descriptions of the village agree on its origin as a fishing commune of the Santa Elena peninsula, quiet in character. Precise details of its local history (dates, communal organization) are scarce in general sources and would be worth checking against local or municipal sources.

The Santuario Blanca Estrella de la Mar

Olón's most recognizable symbol is its sanctuary on top of the hill: the Santuario Blanca Estrella de la Mar. It is a temple shaped like a boat or sailing ship, dedicated to the Virgin as 'Star of the Sea' (a Marian invocation traditionally associated with the protection of sailors and fishermen), built on the highest part of the hill that separates Olón from Montañita, in one of the most spectacular settings on the entire Ecuadorian coast. It was inaugurated on 8 September 1984.

Devotion to the Virgin of the Sea has a logical root in a fishing village, where entrusting yourself to a heavenly protector before heading out to the ocean was part of life. The sanctuary thus became a place of faith and pilgrimage, where locals and visitors come to pray, give thanks or ask for protection, in a tradition that joins spirituality with the trade of the sea.

At the same time, its privileged position on the hill turned it into a tourist magnet: from up there you can take in a stunning panoramic view of Olón's long beach and the Pacific. Over time, the access from Olón was closed by landslides and the way in moved to the Montañita side, from the Monumento al Surfista. That double condition —sacred place and exceptional viewpoint— is what makes the Santuario Blanca Estrella de la Mar the symbolic heart of the village and its most widely shared image.

The sanctuary as a symbol of Olón
The sources agree in presenting the Santuario Blanca Estrella de la Mar as the main attraction and symbol of Olón, sailboat-shaped, inaugurated in 1984 on top of the hill that separates Olón from Montañita. Wikipedia and local tourism sources document the inauguration date and the closure of the access from Olón because of landslides.

In the shadow (and at the side) of Montañita

Olón's tourist history cannot be separated from that of its neighbor Montañita. In the late 20th century, Montañita —a small coastal village separated from Olón by just a hill— became one of the great surf and party destinations in South America. Drawn first by its waves and then by its bohemian atmosphere and its intense nightlife, travelers, backpackers and surfers arrived from all over the world, and Montañita turned into a tourism phenomenon.

That boom had a direct effect on Olón. As Montañita grew and became noisier, more crowded and more party-focused, many travelers started looking nearby for a quieter alternative to stay and rest in, without giving up being close to the action. Olón, with its long beach and its serene atmosphere, was the natural option: close enough to enjoy Montañita, far enough to escape its intensity.

So Olón developed as a tourist destination largely as the quiet, family-friendly flip side of Montañita, offering beach, calm and the sanctuary while leaving the partying to its neighbor. That complementarity —two villages side by side with opposite personalities— defined Olón's tourist identity and remains, today, one of the keys to its appeal.

Olón as a quiet alternative to Montañita
Tourism sources agree in describing Olón as a quieter, more family-friendly alternative to nearby Montañita, whose development as a surf and party destination indirectly drove Olón's own. The precise chronology of this process is vague in general sources.

Olón today: beach, faith and tourism on the Ruta del Spondylus

Today's Olón is an established beach town on the Ruta del Spondylus that has found its place within the tourist corridor of the Ecuadorian coast. Its long golden-sand beach, its relaxed and family-friendly atmosphere and the Santuario Blanca Estrella de la Mar position it as a destination that combines rest, nature and a touch of spirituality, clearly distinct from Montañita's party profile.

The village receives a varied mix of visitors: families looking for quiet, surfers who prefer waves without crowds, travelers using Olón as a serene base for exploring the area, and pilgrims who climb up to the sanctuary. Its position on the Ruta del Spondylus gives it easy access both to the scene to the south (Montañita) and to the natural wonders to the north (Ayampe, Puerto López, Parque Nacional Machalilla and whale watching).

Like any destination that grows, Olón faces the challenge of developing without losing the calm and the character that are its greatest attraction. For now, it remains the serene complement to its famous neighbor: a village of long golden beach, crowned by a sanctuary on the cliff, where the old seafaring identity of the Santa Elena peninsula carries on in a new life tied to sun, sea and rest tourism.

Olón in the coastal tourism corridor
The sources present Olón as an established beach town on the Ruta del Spondylus, valued for its beach, its calm and its sanctuary, within a tourist corridor that includes Montañita, Ayampe and Puerto López. The balance between growth and preserving its character is a common tension in destinations of this kind.

❓ Frequently asked questions

How is Olón different from Montañita?+
They are neighbors almost side by side, but opposites in atmosphere. Montañita is the big party, surf and nightlife destination; Olón is quieter, more family-friendly and more relaxed, with a long golden-sand beach. Many travelers stay in Olón for the calm and cross over to Montañita at night if they want to go out.
What is the Santuario Blanca Estrella de la Mar and how do you get up there?+
It is a church shaped like a sailboat built on top of the hill that separates Olón from Montañita, dedicated to the Virgin as protector of fishermen and sailors; it was inaugurated in 1984. It is both a place of pilgrimage and one of the most spectacular viewpoints on the coast, with stunning views of the sea and the beach, especially at sunset. The historic access from Olón is closed because of landslides: today you go up from the Montañita side, from the Monumento al Surfista, by mototaxi (~US$ 1.50) or on foot. Access to the sanctuary is free.
How do I get to Olón?+
It is on the Ruta del Spondylus (E15), right next to Montañita, in the province of Santa Elena. You get there by bus along the coastal route from Guayaquil (about 3-3.5 h), or via Santa Elena/La Libertad with a transfer, and by local transport, mototaxi or taxi from Montañita, which is minutes away. The reference airport is Guayaquil (GYE).
Is it good for a family trip?+
Yes. Its long golden-sand beach and its quieter, more family-friendly atmosphere make it a good option for going with kids, unlike the intense scene in Montañita. Even so, because it is open sea, swim with care and pay attention to the surf and the currents.
Can you surf in Olón?+
Yes. Olón has good waves in a calmer setting with fewer people than Montañita, which makes it ideal for learning and for surfers looking for quiet. There are schools, lessons for all levels and board rental in the area, and the nearby spots let you move around according to the day's conditions.
What is there to do nearby?+
Plenty. To the south, the scene and the surf of Montañita; to the north, quiet Ayampe and, beyond that, Puerto López and Parque Nacional Machalilla, with Los Frailes beach, Isla de la Plata, the community of Agua Blanca and whale watching (June to September). Olón is a good base for combining beach, quiet and nature.
