🌤️ Clima en Playa Esmeralda
Loading weather…
Playa Esmeralda is one of the most beautiful beaches in eastern Cuba, a few kilometers from Guardalavaca, on the north coast of Holguín province. Its name says it all: the water takes on an intense emerald green tone that, combined with the fine white sand and the vegetation reaching almost to the shore, makes it a Caribbean postcard. Unlike other more exposed beaches, Esmeralda nestles in a small sheltered bay, of calm and shallow waters, ideal for families and for swimming in peace.
The beach is part of the Bahía de Naranjo Natural Park and is integrated into a setting of protected nature, with mangroves, green hills and nearby reefs. The large all-inclusive hotel complexes rise discreetly behind the strip of vegetation, so the beach keeps a well-kept and exclusive air. It's a destination thought above all for resting in the sun, snorkeling and diving on its reefs, and enjoying the sea without the bustle of the big tourist hubs.
This guide covers the essentials of Playa Esmeralda with a practical eye: what the beach and its protected setting are like, what sea activities it offers, how to combine it with Guardalavaca and the excursions of the area (the dolphinarium, the Taíno sites, the city of Holguín or Banes), and what to keep in mind about the all-inclusive scheme. More than a destination to tour, Esmeralda is a place to stop, get into its green water and let the days go by.
📖 History of Playa Esmeralda
The Bahía de Naranjo and Guardalavaca area has a long indigenous history: here Taíno communities flourished, as attested by the important archaeological finds of the nearby site of Chorro de Maíta, one of the most important aboriginal cemeteries in the Caribbean. After the conquest, the region remained a land of estates and rural tranquility for centuries. The tourist development of the north coast of Holguín, with Guardalavaca at the forefront, began to take off in the last decades of the 20th century, when Cuba bet on beach tourism, and Playa Esmeralda was added as one of its most exclusive enclaves, within the Bahía de Naranjo Natural Park. 🗺️ What to see
1
The emerald-water beach
The star: white sand, green water and a sheltered bay ideal for swimming.
The great attraction of Playa Esmeralda is, naturally, its own beach. It's a strip of fine white sand, nestled in a small sheltered cove that gives waters of a characteristic emerald green color, calm and shallow near the shore, which makes it especially comfortable and safe for swimming and for children. The vegetation reaches almost to the sand, giving natural shade and a well-kept, semi-pristine beach air.
Unlike the big urban beaches or the enormous resorts, Esmeralda keeps a more intimate and exclusive scale. It's a place to lie in the sun, take long swims in its warm water and enjoy the calm Caribbean sea. In the mornings, the water is usually especially still and transparent. How to get there: it's next to the resorts, a few kilometers from Guardalavaca. Best time to go: dry season (November to April). Tips: bring sun protection, water and, if you stay elsewhere, check the beach access conditions, since in Cuba the beaches are public but the setting is tied to the hotels.
ℹ️ Distance: Next to the resorts, a few km from Guardalavaca · Access: The beaches in Cuba are public; the setting is tied to the hotels · Best time to go: Dry season (November to April); best in the morning, with a calmer sea · Entry: Free (public beach)

Snorkeling and diving on the reefs
Nearby coral reefs with good marine life, accessible for snorkeling and diving.
The north coast of Holguín, and in particular the Guardalavaca and Esmeralda area, is known for its coral reefs near the shore, which offer excellent conditions for snorkeling and diving. In relatively shallow waters you can see corals, colorful fish, sponges and other marine fauna typical of the Caribbean, without needing to go too far.
The dive centers of the area organize dives for all levels, including beginner courses and introductory dives for novices, as well as outings for certified divers to deeper points, with walls, caves and coral formations. Snorkeling, for its part, can often be done from the beach itself or on short boat outings. How to get there: with the nautical centers of the hotels or of Guardalavaca. Best time to go: dry season, with better water visibility. Tips: respect the corals (don't touch or step on them), use reef-friendly sunscreen and always follow the guides' instructions.
ℹ️ Where: Dive centers in the Guardalavaca/Esmeralda area · Best time to go: Dry season, with better water visibility · Entry: Dive US$ 35–55; introductory course ~US$ 60–80; guided snorkeling US$ 20–35 (source: nautical centers of the area, verified July 2026) · Duration: Half a day

Bahía de Naranjo Natural Park and dolphinarium
A protected natural area with mangroves, islets, a natural aquarium and a dolphinarium.
Playa Esmeralda is part of the setting of the Bahía de Naranjo Natural Park, a protected area of mangroves, green hills, islets and sheltered waters that stretches along this part of the north coast of Holguín. The park offers boat rides through the bay, nature watching and an aquarium/dolphinarium set up on one of its cays, where exhibitions and swim-with-dolphins programs are held, one of the most popular excursions for families in the area.
The boats tour the bay among mangroves and small cays, in a quiet and green atmosphere, very different from the open sea. It's an excursion suitable for all ages and a good way to combine the beach with a bit of nature and fauna. How to get there: with the organized excursions from the hotels or agencies of Guardalavaca. Best time to go: all year; best in the dry season. Tips: book the dolphin activities in advance, which usually have limited spots; bring sun protection and a camera.

Chorro de Maíta archaeological site
One of the most important Taíno cemeteries in the Caribbean, with a museum and reconstructed Taíno village.
A few kilometers inland from Playa Esmeralda and Guardalavaca is the archaeological site of El Chorro de Maíta, declared a National Monument of Cuba and one of the most important aboriginal cemeteries in the Caribbean. There, more than a hundred indigenous burials from the 15th-16th centuries were excavated, at the moment of contact with the Spanish, which are today displayed in situ under a cover, next to a museum with pieces, pottery and remains that document the life and funerary rites of the Taíno of the region.
Across from the museum, a life-size 'Taíno Village' was reconstructed, with bohíos (huts), tools and scenes of indigenous daily life, ideal for understanding how these peoples lived. It's the best introduction to the pre-Columbian past of the north coast of Holguín, one of the areas with the highest density of aboriginal sites in Cuba.

In nearby Banes operates the Baní Indocuban Museum, with one of the best collections of aboriginal archaeology in the country, including the famous 'gold idol' (a small Taíno pectoral).
