Guardalavaca

📌Province
Guardalavaca is one of Cuba's main beach destinations, on the north coast of Holguín province, in the east of the island. It's not a city, but a sun-and-beach tourist hub formed by several neighboring beaches of white sand and turquoise sea —Guardalavaca, Playa Esmeralda and Playa Pesquero, among others—, with all-inclusive hotels and a nearby coral reef ideal for snorkeling. It's a little over 50 km from the city of Holguín, and the area combines beach rest with a setting of great historical value: Columbus landed nearby in 1492 and Taíno archaeological sites abound
📌Service town
Guardalavaca's logistical base is the city of Holguín and, above all, its Frank País International Airport (HOG), a little under an hour away, which receives numerous charter and international flights that bring tourists directly to the coast's resorts, plus domestic flights. In the Guardalavaca area itself there are hotels, a tourist shopping center or two, dive centers, money exchange, hotel medical assistance and services for the tourist. For errands, shopping and local life, the reference is Holguín; also nearby are the towns of Banes and the charming Gibara
📌Best time to go
The best time for Guardalavaca is the dry season, from November to April, with sunny days, a calm sea, less humidity and ideal weather for beach and diving: it's the high season. Summer (May to October) is hotter and more humid, with the rainy season and, above all, the risk of hurricanes between August and October, worth keeping in mind for a coastal destination. The water stays warm almost all year. As in any Caribbean beach destination, the northern winter months (December to March) are the most in demand
📌Suggested days
As a beach destination, Guardalavaca allows stays of 5 to 7 days or more, on a resort basis, to rest, swim, dive and do some excursion. But its great advantage is the surroundings: with 2 to 4 well-used days you can add half-day or full-day excursions to Columbus's landing site (Bariay), to the Chorro de Maíta aboriginal cemetery and the Banes Indo-Cuban Museum, to the coastal town of Gibara, to the city of Holguín (the 'City of Parks') and to the neighboring beaches. It's ideal to combine several beach days with historical and cultural getaways
📌Currency
Cuban peso (CUP). At the resorts prices are usually handled in U.S. dollars (USD) and euros, and you pay in foreign currency or by card (not from U.S. banks). It's best to bring cash in euros or dollars for excursions, tips and purchases outside the hotels; exchange only what's needed at a CADECA

Guardalavaca is one of those names that evoke the Caribbean in its purest form: fine white sand, calm waters of an intense turquoise, a coral reef a few meters from the shore and a backdrop of tropical vegetation. Located on the north coast of Holguín province, in eastern Cuba, it's one of the country's great sun-and-beach destinations, with the particular feature of having a somewhat quieter and more natural atmosphere than other more crowded resorts. Its curious name —which could be translated as 'guard the cow'— has its origin, according to tradition, in the times of pirates and smuggling.

But Guardalavaca's great virtue is that it combines the best beach with an exceptional setting. Very close by are Playa Esmeralda and Playa Pesquero, just as beautiful; the underwater world, with its coral reef, is a paradise for snorkeling and diving. And, an excursion away, awaits one of the most history-rich regions in Cuba: Christopher Columbus landed nearby in 1492 and described it as 'the most beautiful land human eyes have ever seen', and the area holds some of the most important Taíno archaeological sites in the Caribbean.

This guide covers the essentials of Guardalavaca with a practical, warm eye: how to make the most of its beaches and its coral reef, which historical and cultural excursions not to miss (Columbus's landing, Chorro de Maíta, Banes, Gibara, Holguín), where to stay, how to get around and what to keep in mind. Guardalavaca is the ideal destination for anyone who wants first-rate Caribbean beach rest without giving up on discovering the authentic, historical Cuba that surrounds it.

📖 History of Guardalavaca

Guardalavaca, as a tourist hub, is of relatively recent development: its growth as a sun-and-beach hub came mainly in the last decades of the 20th century and the early 21st, when Cuba bet on international tourism and the north coast of Holguín, with its magnificent beaches, became one of the country's main destinations. But the region surrounding it has an ancient and fundamental history. Before the arrival of the Europeans, this part of northeastern Cuba was densely populated by the Taíno, and is considered one of the areas of greatest indigenous archaeological richness in Cuba: very close to Guardalavaca is Chorro de Maíta, one of the most important aboriginal cemeteries in the Caribbean, and the Banes region preserves a highly valuable Indo-Cuban legacy (the famous 'Banes golden idol' comes from there). Moreover, it was on this same Holguín north coast —in the Bariay area, near Guardalavaca— that Christopher Columbus first landed in Cuba on October 28, 1492, during his first voyage, marveling at the beauty of the landscape. The name 'Guardalavaca' itself is the subject of legends: the most widespread explanation links it to the colonial era of pirates and smugglers, when the area is said to have served to hide ('guard') cattle and goods from illicit trade or from corsairs. Today, Guardalavaca and the neighboring beaches (Esmeralda, Pesquero) form one of the most important tourist hubs in Cuba, combining beach rest with proximity to historical sites of the discovery and the Taíno world. 🗺️ What to see

1
Playa Guardalavaca
The main beach of the tourist hub: white sand, turquoise sea and a nearby coral reef, with stretches of public access.
Playa Guardalavaca is the beach that gives the destination its name and its heart: a strip of fine white sand facing a calm sea of intense turquoise color, bordered by tropical vegetation and protected by a nearby coral reef that keeps the waters calm and transparent. It's one of the prettiest beaches in eastern Cuba and one of the great attractions of Holguín province. Unlike some Cuban destinations where the beach is monopolized by the resorts, Guardalavaca keeps a somewhat more open and popular character: it has all-inclusive hotels, but also public-access stretches frequented by Cubans and visitors, which gives it a more relaxed and authentic atmosphere. In the area there are kiosks, umbrella and lounger rental, water sports and a small hub of tourist services. The coral reef, a few meters from the shore at some points, makes Guardalavaca an excellent place for snorkeling: you just have to go in a little to discover corals, colorful fish and marine life. It's a beach ideal both for resting and for water activity. As at any beach destination, it's best to watch your belongings, use sun protection and respect the guidance on currents and swimming areas. The dry season (November to April) offers the best conditions.
ℹ️ Distance: North coast of Holguín, a little over 50 km from the city of Holguín · Best time to go: Dry season (November to April); calmer sea and sunny · Entry: Free (public beach); umbrella/lounger rental about US$ 2–5; water sports separate · Duration: A day or more (beach stay)
2
Playa Esmeralda and Playa Pesquero
The neighboring beaches, just as beautiful: Esmeralda in a protected setting and Pesquero with large resorts, both white sand.
Next to Guardalavaca, the same stretch of Holguín's north coast holds two other exceptional beaches that complete the tourist hub. Playa Esmeralda, a few kilometers away, is one of the prettiest in the area: a cove of dazzling white sand and emerald-colored waters (hence its name), framed in a well-kept, protected natural setting, with several good all-inclusive hotels. Its serene beauty makes it a favorite of those who know the region. Playa Pesquero (and the nearby Playa Yuraguanal) is another of the destination's great beaches, one of the most developed for hotels, with extensive all-inclusive resorts facing a long beach of light sand and turquoise sea. It's ideal for a classic beach stay, with all the infrastructure of the big hotels, water sports and entertainment. All these beaches share the virtues of Holguín's north coast: white sand, calm and warm waters, a coral reef for snorkeling and a setting of tropical vegetation. Staying at one of them also lets you easily visit the others and combine rest with the area's excursions. Each has its own character, but all offer the same postcard Caribbean. It's best to check, depending on your lodging, the access to the different beaches and the transfers between them.
ℹ️ Distance: A few km from Guardalavaca, on the same north coast (short transfers) · Best time to go: Dry season (November to April); sunny days · Entry: Public beaches free; all-inclusive resorts from about US$ 100/night; services separate · Duration: A day or more each

Diving and snorkeling on the coral reef
Guardalavaca's great underwater attraction: coral reefs, marine life and dive centers for all levels.
One of Guardalavaca's greatest treasures is underwater. The north coast of Holguín has a rich coral reef close to the shore, which makes the area a first-rate destination for snorkeling and diving. At many points you just have to go in a few meters from the beach, mask and snorkel in hand, to discover coral formations, colorful tropical fish, sponges and abundant marine life in warm, transparent waters. For those who want to go further, dive centers operate in the area offering dives for all levels, from intro dives for beginners to outings for certified divers, exploring reefs, walls and, at some points, wrecks and underwater caves. The good visibility and the richness of the seabeds make Guardalavaca and its neighboring beaches a place much valued by lovers of the underwater world. Besides diving and snorkeling, the area offers other water sports and activities: kayak, sailing, catamaran or boat rides, and, at facilities in the region, the chance to swim with dolphins at dolphinariums or aquariums. It's a complete destination for those who enjoy the active sea. It's best to book the activities with authorized operators and centers, respect the coral protection rules (don't touch or damage them) and use marine-friendly sunscreen.
ℹ️ Distance: Off the beaches of Guardalavaca and neighbors (access from the shore or by boat outings). Eagle Ray dive center (Marlin/Náutica) in Guardalavaca; Diving Center Gaviota at Playa Pesquero · Best time to go: Dry season for better visibility and a calmer sea · Entry: Snorkeling from the shore free; diving from about US$ 35–50 per dive with gear (source: Eagle Ray/Marlin and dive aggregators, verified July 2026) · Duration: 1 to 2 hours (snorkeling) to half a day (diving outings)

Chorro de Maíta and the Taíno village
One of the most important indigenous cemeteries in the Caribbean, with a site museum and a recreation of a Taíno village, very close by.
About 7 km from Guardalavaca, in the Yaguajay area (municipality of Banes), inland, is one of the most important archaeological sites in the Caribbean: Chorro de Maíta. It is the largest aboriginal cemetery excavated in Cuba —with more than a hundred Taíno skeletons preserved in situ— of the peoples who densely inhabited this region before and during the arrival of the Spanish. Today it functions as a site museum, with the remains preserved and displayed in situ, at the very place of the find, under a large cover. The visit lets you observe up close how the Cuban indigenous people buried their dead, with their grave goods and ritual positions, and better understand their culture, their beliefs and their way of life. It's a unique and educational experience, a direct window into Cuba's pre-Columbian world that very few places offer so tangibly. The museum is open Tuesday to Saturday from 9 to 5 and Sundays from 9 to 1 (it's best to confirm before going). Right across from the archaeological museum is the Taíno Village, a life-size recreation of an indigenous settlement, with bohíos (the dwellings), figures and representations of the aborigines' daily life: agriculture, fishing, crafts, ceremonies. This reconstruction helps to imagine how the original inhabitants of the area that Columbus found on his arrival lived. Chorro de Maíta is the perfect historical excursion for those staying in Guardalavaca who want to know the historical depth of the region, far beyond the beach. It's best to plan transport (taxi or excursion).
ℹ️ Distance: About 7 km from Guardalavaca, in Yaguajay (municipality of Banes), inland (taxi or excursion) · Horario: Tuesday to Saturday 9–5; Sundays 9–1 (verified July 2026) · Entry: Site museum US$ 2 per person (+ US$ 5 camera/video charge); Taíno Village separate (cheap entry) (source: Holguín municipal portal / EcuRed, verified July 2026) · Duration: Half a day (with transfer)

Columbus's landing site (Bariay)
The place where Columbus first landed in Cuba in 1492, now a monument park, a short distance from Guardalavaca.
Very close to Guardalavaca, on the same north coast of Holguín, is one of the most history-laden places in all of the Americas: the Bariay area, where tradition and much of the research place the first landing of Christopher Columbus on Cuban soil, on October 28, 1492, during his first voyage. As the story goes, it was upon contemplating this landscape that Columbus uttered his famous phrase that it was 'the most beautiful land human eyes have ever seen'. To commemorate this milestone, the Bariay National Monument Park (sometimes called the Christopher Columbus Nature Park) was created in the area, a space that recalls the encounter of the two worlds. It has a commemorative monument erected around the fifth centenary of the discovery (1992), reconstructions of Taíno villages, trails through a protected natural setting, a beach and an interpretive area that contextualizes the landing and the life of the indigenous people who inhabited the region. The visit combines history, nature and a beautiful coastal landscape, and lets you reflect on that founding moment of the first contact between Europeans and indigenous people in Cuba. It's a highly recommended excursion for those staying in Guardalavaca who want to go beyond beach rest. It's best to confirm the condition and opening hours of the park, which may vary, and arrange transport (taxi or excursion).
ℹ️ Distance: Bariay area, north coast, near Guardalavaca (taxi or excursion) · Best time to go: Dry season; in good weather. October 28, anniversary of the landing · Entry: Entry to the monument park about US$ 3–5 per person (verified July 2026; confirm when you visit) · Duration: Half a day (with transfer)

Banes and the Baní Indo-Cuban Museum
The town of Banes, indigenous archaeological capital of Cuba, with its museum and the famous Taíno 'golden idol'.
The town of Banes, in the interior near Guardalavaca, is considered the Indo-Cuban archaeological 'capital' of Cuba, for the extraordinary richness of Taíno remains found in its surroundings. It's a fascinating stop for anyone who wants to delve into the island's indigenous world, complementing the visit to Chorro de Maíta. The great attraction of Banes is the Baní Indo-Cuban Museum, which holds one of the most valuable aboriginal archaeological collections in the country. Among its pieces stands out the famous 'Banes idol', a small figure of gold of indigenous manufacture, one of the jewels of Cuban archaeology and an exceptional object that illustrates the degree of development and symbolism of the Taíno culture. The museum also brings together ceramics, tools, ornaments and ritual objects that let you learn in detail about the life of the region's original inhabitants. Beyond the museum, Banes is a town with its own history and personality, also tied to the 20th-century sugar development. The excursion to Banes and its museum, combined with Chorro de Maíta, offers a complete tour of the area's indigenous legacy, one of the richest in Cuba. It's an ideal cultural complement to a beach stay in Guardalavaca. It's best to confirm the museum's hours and plan transport, since Banes is somewhat farther than Chorro de Maíta.
ℹ️ Distance: Town of Banes, in the interior near Guardalavaca (taxi or excursion) · Best time to go: All year; during museum hours (check) · Entry: Baní Indo-Cuban Museum, cheap entry about US$ 1–2 per person (verified July 2026) · Duration: Half a day (with transfer)

Gibara, the 'White Town'
A charming colonial coastal town near Guardalavaca, of white houses, a malecón and a bohemian air.
Not far from Guardalavaca, on the coast, is Gibara, a charming colonial fishing town known as the 'White Town' for its whitewashed houses. Overlooking a lovely bay and framed by the 'Silla de Gibara' (a mountain of characteristic silhouette that was also sighted by Columbus's navigators), Gibara preserves a historic center with colonial mansions, a malecón, churches, remains of fortifications and a quiet, somewhat decaying atmosphere that wins travelers over. Gibara was a prosperous port in the 19th century, which explains the elegance of its architecture, and today it's a destination that combines history, sea and culture. It has several small museums, remains of colonial fortifications and the atmosphere of an authentic fishing town, very different from that of the coast's resorts. In recent years it gained fame for its Gibara International Film Festival, which each year fills the town with filmmakers and artists. In the surroundings there are also natural attractions, such as cave systems and beaches. Gibara is a perfect half-day or full-day excursion from Guardalavaca, ideal for anyone who wants to discover a coastal town with personality and see another face of Holguín's north coast, beyond the beach. It's reached by taxi, car or organized excursion, and it's a wonderful complement to a sun-and-sea stay.
ℹ️ Distance: Coastal town west of Guardalavaca, near Holguín (taxi or excursion) · Best time to go: All year; during the Gibara Film Festival, a special atmosphere · Entry: Touring the town is free; local museums about US$ 1–2; Cueva de los Panaderos with a guide US$ 5–10 · Duration: Half a day to a full day

❓ Frequently asked questions

What is Guardalavaca, a city or a beach?+
Guardalavaca is not a city, but one of Cuba's main beach tourist hubs, on the north coast of Holguín province. It's made up of several neighboring beaches of white sand and turquoise sea —Guardalavaca, Playa Esmeralda, Playa Pesquero— with all-inclusive hotels and a nearby coral reef. The reference city, with services and an airport, is Holguín, a little under an hour away.
Is it worth going to Guardalavaca?+
Yes, especially if you're after a first-rate Caribbean beach with a somewhat quieter setting than other Cuban resorts. It has white sand, a turquoise sea, an excellent coral reef for snorkeling and diving, and public beach stretches. Its great advantage is the historical setting: an excursion away are the site where Columbus landed in 1492, Taíno archaeological sites (Chorro de Maíta, Banes) and charming towns like Gibara.
When is the best time to go?+
The best time is the dry season, from November to April, with sunny days, a calm sea and ideal for beach and diving (it's the high season). Summer (May to October) is hotter and more humid, with the rainy season and, above all, hurricane risk between August and October, something to keep well in mind at a coastal destination. The water stays warm almost all year.
How do you get to Guardalavaca?+
The most common way is to fly to Frank País International Airport (HOG) in Holguín, which receives many charter and international flights tied to coastal tourism, plus domestic flights from Havana (around 1.5 h). From the airport there are direct transfers to the resorts (around 1 h). The city of Holguín is a little under an hour from Guardalavaca.
What excursions can you do from Guardalavaca?+
Many and very rich ones: Columbus's landing site at Bariay (1492), the Chorro de Maíta aboriginal cemetery with its Taíno village, the Banes Indo-Cuban Museum (with the famous 'golden idol'), the coastal town of Gibara (the 'White Town'), the city of Holguín (the 'City of Parks', with the Loma de la Cruz) and the Mayabe Lookout. They combine history, culture and nature.
Is Guardalavaca good for diving?+
Very good. The north coast of Holguín has a rich coral reef close to the shore, ideal both for snorkeling (at many points reached from the beach) and for diving. There are dive centers with dives for all levels, which explore reefs and, at some points, walls and caves, with good visibility and abundant marine life.
Where does the name 'Guardalavaca' come from?+
The curious name —which literally would be 'guard the cow'— is the subject of legends. The most widespread explanation links it to the colonial era of pirates and smugglers, when the area is said to have served to hide ('guard') cattle and goods from illicit trade or safe from corsairs. It's a popular tradition rather than an origin documented with certainty.
How do you get around between the Guardalavaca beaches and how is transport paid?+
The tourist hub has no urban public guagua, so three options are combined: the Guardalavaca Beach Tour bus (Transtur), a hop-on/hop-off minibus that links Guardalavaca, Playa Esmeralda and Playa Pesquero for about US$ 5 per day; taxis and classic cars, hired by agreeing the price beforehand (paid in cash, in USD/EUR or CUP; no meter); and the hotel transfers for the excursions. The tourist bus accepts cash in dollars or an international card (not from U.S. banks). In the city of Holguín, the service base, the urban guagua is tracked in real time with the official app 'La Guagua' and the fare is paid in cash in Cuban pesos.
