La Falda is a classic sierra town in the Valle de Punilla, in the hills of Córdoba, halfway between Cosquín and Capilla del Monte. It was one of the great destinations of the 'belle époque' of Argentine tourism, when the country's elite spent its summers in these hotels, and it still carries that air of old-world elegance, now a little faded and melancholy, which is part of its charm.

The symbol of that glorious past is the Gran Hotel Edén, a magnificent and enormous luxury hotel from the early 20th century, today in ruins but open to visitors, which hosted presidents, aristocrats and international figures, and which also drags along a dark history through its links with Nazi Germany. Beyond the Edén, La Falda offers hills, scenic roads such as the Camino del Cuadrado, rivers, festivals (like the Festival Nacional del Tango) and the peaceful atmosphere of the Punilla towns.

This guide covers La Falda from a practical angle: the visit to the Hotel Edén and its history, the Camino del Cuadrado and the walks in the hills, the reservoir and the rivers, its role as a base in the Valle de Punilla, and the useful details for getting there, sleeping, eating and getting around one of the towns with the most history in the Córdoba sierras.

📖 History of La Falda (Hotel Edén)

La Falda was born and grew in the shadow of the Gran Hotel Edén, opened in the early 20th century by a family of German origin, which turned the town into one of the most exclusive destinations in Argentina during the 'belle époque'. The hotel hosted the country's elite and carries a controversial history because of its owners' Nazi sympathies; today it is a ruined landmark and one of the town's main attractions.

🗺️ What to see

1
Gran Hotel Edén
The historic, enormous luxury hotel in ruins, a symbol of the splendor and the decline of La Falda.
The Gran Hotel Edén is La Falda's great icon and a must-see. Opened in the early 20th century by the Eichhorn family, of German origin, it was one of the most luxurious and exclusive hotels in South America, with hundreds of rooms, gardens, its own electricity supply, telephone and every modern convenience of the day. Argentine presidents, aristocrats and celebrities passed through its halls. The hotel also drags along a dark history: its owners had sympathies for and links with the Nazi regime, which added legends and controversy. After its decline, it survives today in ruins and can be visited with a guide, walking through its stripped halls, which combine beauty, mystery and melancholy. There are daytime (historical) visits from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and themed night tours (myths and legends) leaving at 9, 10 and 11 p.m.
ℹ️ Av. Edén 1400. Daytime visit $8.000 ARS; night visit $12.000 ARS (2026, verify). Children under 10 free on the daytime tour; La Falda residents free with ID. Night tours require a booking.
2
Camino del Cuadrado
A historic, winding mountain road linking La Falda with Río Ceballos and the Sierras Chicas.
The Camino del Cuadrado is one of the most beautiful and emblematic mountain roads in Córdoba. It links the Valle de Punilla (at the level of La Falda) with Río Ceballos and the Sierras Chicas, crossing the hills along a winding, scenic route with curves, viewpoints and spectacular views over both valleys. It is an outing in itself, ideal to drive slowly while enjoying the landscape and stopping at the viewpoints. The road has its own history, with old and cobbled stretches, and is one of the classic connections between the province's two great sierra valleys.
ℹ️ Public road, free access. Drive it by car or motorbike; take care on the curves and with possible fog. Check road conditions.
3
Dique La Falda and the sierra rivers
A reservoir and mountain rivers for walking and recreation.
La Falda has a reservoir and mountain watercourses that offer space for recreation and rest. The reservoir, ringed by hills, is a place to walk, picnic and enjoy the landscape, and depending on the season there are water sports or fishing. The rivers and streams in the area form pools and swimming spots to cool off in summer. These green and water spaces are the natural complement to the town, ideal for a relaxed family day away from the bustle, in the typical sierra setting of Punilla.
ℹ️ Access generally free. Best in spring and summer; ask about activities and services.
4
Downtown La Falda and the Festival Nacional del Tango
The heart of the town, with its avenue, shops and the home of the Festival Nacional del Tango.
Downtown La Falda, around the main avenue and the church, concentrates the shops, cafés, tea houses and the everyday life of the town. La Falda is also the home of one of the country's great tango gatherings, the Festival Nacional del Tango, which every summer (it is usually held in July or during the summer season depending on the edition) fills the town with shows, milongas and crowds. Through the year there are other cultural events, plus the chance to stroll, buy crafts and regional sweets, and enjoy the quiet, nostalgic air that defines this town with its long tourist tradition.
ℹ️ The Festival Nacional del Tango has many free activities; check dates and program. The center is walkable and free.
5
Cueva del Indio and the sierra viewpoints (Cerro La Banderita, Camino El Dragón)
A hill trail about 11 km from the center recalling the nomadic peoples who lived in the area, plus a network of viewpoints and walks of varying difficulty (Cerro La Banderita, Camino El Dragón, Mirador del Cuadrado, Mirador Bella Vista) in the hills around the town.
Around La Falda, the official tourism site maps a network of freely accessible trails and viewpoints: Cerro La Banderita (moderate trek, about 4 hours), Camino El Dragón (easy walk, 1 to 1.5 hours round trip), Mirador del Cuadrado (moderate, about 3 hours) and Mirador Bella Vista (moderate, 2 hours), plus the Cueva del Indio, some 11 km from the center, a site that evokes the life of the nomadic peoples who lived in these hills, with food service, toilets and barbecue grills. It is a good combination for anyone who wants to walk and gain height with views over the Valle de Punilla, rounding out the historical visit to the Hotel Edén.
ℹ️ Trails with free access (source: official site turismolafalda.gob.ar/encontrateNaturaleza, verified July 2026). The Cueva del Indio, 11 km from the center, has no entry fee published online; ask at the tourist office (tel. 03548 422005-423007).

Complejo Recreativo 7 Cascadas
Waterfalls and stepped pools on the river, now turned into a complex with swimming pools, a slide, a water park and a Tierra de Dinos area, very popular in summer.
The 7 Cascadas are La Falda's great water outing: waterfalls and natural pools that today operate as a licensed recreation complex, with three swimming pools, a water park, live shows, barbecue grills, food service and a themed area for kids (Tierra de Dinos). It is one of the most visited postcards of the Valle de Punilla in summer and a good option for a family day out between nature and recreation.

📖 History of La Falda (Hotel Edén)

Origins, formation and what the sources say.

The railway and the birth of the town

In a Berlin safe deposit box, in 1932, a married couple of Argentine hoteliers placed thirty thousand German marks at the disposal of Joseph Goebbels, Hitler's propaganda minister. The money came from a mountain hotel in the hills of Córdoba, more than eleven thousand kilometers away: the Gran Hotel Edén of La Falda. Decades later, that donation — documented by FBI investigations — and the owners' personal friendship with Hitler himself would turn this now ruined hotel into one of the most enigmatic and controversial sites in Argentine tourism, even feeding the urban legend that the Nazi leader hid there after the war.

But the story of La Falda begins earlier, and far more modestly. Like most of the towns in the Valle de Punilla, it was born out of the railway and the sierra tourism that flourished in Argentina in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The rail line that ran through Punilla, connecting the city of Córdoba with towns such as Cosquín, La Falda and Capilla del Monte, was decisive: it brought the hills within reach of the Buenos Aires and Córdoba elite, who began to look here for a healthy climate, clean air and rest, at a time when the sierras were even promoted for their supposed curative powers against respiratory illnesses.

In that context, the area of La Falda, at the foot of the hills, became an attractive spot for tourist development. The mountain landscape, the rivers and the nearby railway offered ideal conditions for building hotels and summer residences. The town grew around that tourist vocation, which would shape its whole history and identity, rather than around farming or industry. The first building of the future Edén was put up in 1897 by Roberto Bahlcke, an officer of the German army, though the great leap came later, when the property passed into the hands of a couple who would turn it into one of the most luxurious hotels in South America: Walter and Ida Eichhorn.

The Gran Hotel Edén: the splendor of the 'belle époque'

The Gran Hotel Edén was the heart of La Falda's history. Driven by Walter and Ida Eichhorn, a couple from the German-Argentine community, it expanded in the early 20th century until it became one of the most luxurious and modern hotels in South America. It had hundreds of rooms, vast halls, gardens, its own power plant, running water, telephone and every modern convenience of the day, at a level of comfort that was exceptional for the sierra setting of the time, comparable to the great alpine hotels of Europe.

Through the first decades of the century, the Edén lived its golden age. Argentine presidents, ministers, aristocrats, artists and international celebrities paraded through its halls, spending long stays in La Falda drawn by the hotel's luxury and the mountain climate. The whole town prospered to the rhythm of the hotel, which brought jobs and fame, and it embodied like few others the spirit of the 'belle époque' of Argentine tourism, when the hills of Córdoba were a byword for elegance and distinction.

The hotel does, however, carry a dark and very well documented side: the Eichhorns were personal friends of Adolf Hitler and, according to FBI investigations launched during the Second World War, active Nazi militants who raised funds for the führer's rise to power. In the early 1930s the couple deposited some thirty thousand German marks in an account at the disposal of Joseph Goebbels, propaganda minister of the Third Reich, helping to finance decisive political campaigns of the Nazi party. The episode is documented in intelligence archives and in later journalistic investigations, and today it is a central part of the story told on the guided tours of the site.

On top of that came, in December 1939, the arrival in Argentina of close to a thousand sailors from the German battleship Admiral Graf Spee, scuttled off the Uruguayan coast after the Battle of the River Plate. A group of those sailors made it to La Falda, and at least seven of them began working at the Hotel Edén, strengthening the link between the establishment and the German community mobilized by the war. From there also came the legend — never historically confirmed — that Hitler faked his death in the Berlin bunker in 1945 and came to hide at the Edén; a theory with no documentary basis, but one that still feeds the hotel's folklore and its mystery tourism to this day.

Decline, ruins and tourist reinvention

The splendor of the Gran Hotel Edén did not last forever. Several factors — the end of the golden age of the grand hotels, the conflicts stemming from its owners' links to Nazism, changes in tourism and financial trouble — led to the closure and gradual abandonment of the establishment in the middle of the 20th century. What had been one of the most luxurious hotels on the continent slid into ruin, stripped of its furniture and its finery.

Far from erasing its mark, that decline ended up giving the Edén a second life as a tourist attraction. Its stripped halls, its dim corridors and its melancholy atmosphere proved irresistible to visitors, and the hotel began opening to the public through guided tours covering its history, its splendor and its legends, including night tours with actors. Today the ruined Edén is, paradoxically, La Falda's main landmark.

Meanwhile, the town broadened its tourist offer beyond the hotel: the Camino del Cuadrado, the rivers and the reservoir, the hill walks and cultural events such as the Festival Nacional del Tango keep it alive as a destination in the Valle de Punilla. La Falda combines the nostalgia of its glorious past with the calm of the Córdoba sierra towns, drawing those who look for history, landscape and rest in the hills.

The Festival Nacional del Tango and La Falda's cultural identity

Beyond the shadow of the Gran Hotel Edén, La Falda forged in the second half of the 20th century a cultural identity of its own that keeps it alive as a destination. The landmark of that identity is the Festival Nacional del Tango, one of the most important tango gatherings in the country, which since the middle of the 20th century has drawn orchestras, singers, dancers and milongueros to this sierra town. The festival turned this town in the hills of Córdoba into a reference point for the Buenos Aires genre par excellence, in a singular crossing of urban tango culture and mountain landscape.

The choice of La Falda as the host has historical roots: back in the Edén's golden age, the town was a stage for shows and for the social life of the elite, and tango was part of that world of ballrooms and orchestras. Over time, the festival became an institution and a mark of the town's identity, with its stages, its milongas and the participation of established figures and new talent, in a celebration that every year revives the town's bond with the music.

Today La Falda combines that cultural inheritance with its role as a tourist base in the Valle de Punilla. The nostalgia of the Hotel Edén, the Camino del Cuadrado, the rivers and waterfalls, the nature reserves and the tango festival make up a varied offer that keeps the town among the classic destinations of the Córdoba sierras. La Falda is, in short, a place where the splendor of the past, the mountain landscape and a cultural life of its own coexist and reinvent themselves, drawing those who look for history, landscape, music and rest.
