📖 History of La Cumbre (Paragliding)

La Cumbre was born in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, tied to the arrival of the railway and to Córdoba's growth as a destination for rest and health, at a time when the sierras drew travelers and the sick in search of their mild climate. The strong presence of the British community —railway employees and residents— left it its English air, visible in its architecture, its golf course and its traditions. Over time it settled in as a sierra tourist town and, later, won worldwide fame as a paragliding destination thanks to the conditions at Cuchi Corral. The full history is on our history page.

🗺️ What to see

1
Paragliding at Cuchi Corral
Argentina's mecca of free flight: a natural ramp above the Pinto River valley with exceptional conditions.
Cuchi Corral is the place that gave La Cumbre its worldwide fame. It is a natural take-off ramp a few kilometers from town, on a balcony overlooking the Pinto River valley. The wind conditions, the thermals and the topography make this one of the best sites in the country —and internationally recognized— for paragliding and hang gliding, for experts and beginners alike. For anyone who has never flown, the option is the two-seater (tandem) paragliding flight, or 'first flight', in which you fly alongside a certified instructor for some 15 to 20 minutes. Taking off from the ramp and gliding over the valley, with the sierras and the river far below, is unforgettable. Cuchi Corral is also a spectacular viewpoint in its own right, and plenty of people go simply to take in the landscape and watch the paragliders launch. Getting there: by car or with transfers from La Cumbre along a road that leads to the ramp (check its condition). Best time to go: spring and autumn, with the best flying conditions; fly at the right hours for the wind. Tips: book tandem flights with certified operators and pilots, check the day's conditions (flying depends on the weather), and bring comfortable shoes, a light warm layer and a camera.

📖 History of La Cumbre (Paragliding)

Origins, formation and what the sources say.

The railway, the English and the origin of the town

In La Cumbre people still take tea at five in the afternoon, and that custom is no invention for tourists: it comes straight from the English of the railway. The birth of La Cumbre as a town is bound up with the arrival of the train in the sierras of Córdoba, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The train transformed the Punilla Valley, connecting it with the city of Córdoba and with the rest of the country, and opened the region to tourism and development. The place's own name, 'La Cumbre' (the summit), points to its position in the upper part of the valley, at the highest point of the railway line through the area.

One distinctive trait of La Cumbre was the strong presence of the British community. Argentina's railways were largely in the hands of English companies, and many of their employees, technicians and managers, along with other British residents, settled or spent their summers here. That community left a lasting mark: the English-looking architecture, the customs, afternoon tea and, most emblematically, the golf course, one of the oldest outside Buenos Aires.

So La Cumbre took shape as a sierra town with a character all its own within Punilla: more elegant, quieter and more 'British' than its neighbors, a restful refuge in the sierras with a cultural stamp it keeps to this day.

The name 'La Cumbre'
The name is linked to the place's position at the highest point of the railway's run through the Punilla Valley, that is, at the 'cumbre' or summit of the line. It is a descriptive place name tied to the geography and the railway history of the area.

The sierras as a destination for health and rest

In the early 20th century, the sierras of Córdoba boomed as a destination for health and rest. Their dry, temperate climate, their clean air and their calm drew travelers from Buenos Aires and other cities, and especially people looking to recover from respiratory illnesses such as tuberculosis, at a time when the sierra climate was considered therapeutic. Grand hotels, guesthouses and summer homes sprang up across the Punilla Valley.

La Cumbre was one of the towns that benefited from that movement, adding the profile of a tourist and rest destination to that of an English-flavored town. Hotels, residences and the infrastructure of a summer resort of some standing were built, cementing a tourist vocation that lasts to this day.

The area also drew artists and intellectuals. In nearby Cruz Chica, the writer Manuel Mujica Láinez set up his celebrated house 'El Paraíso', now a house-museum, an example of the pull these sierras exerted on Argentine culture. La Cumbre thus established itself as a town of rest, nature and a certain refinement, in the heart of the Sierras Chicas.

Crowned as the paragliding capital

In the closing decades of the 20th century and the start of the 21st, La Cumbre added a new and vibrant side to its identity as a traditional sierra town: that of Argentina's capital of paragliding and free flight. Behind this fame is Cuchi Corral, a natural take-off ramp a few kilometers from town, on a balcony overlooking the Pinto River valley.

The conditions at Cuchi Corral —the winds, the thermal currents and the topography— turned out to be exceptional for paragliding and hang gliding, drawing athletes from all over the country and abroad. The site became the stage for competitions, meets and records, and an international reference point for free flight, as well as a spectacular viewpoint over the valley.

That new vocation renewed La Cumbre's appeal, and today the town combines its traditional profile of rest, nature and English air with the adrenaline of paragliding. The tandem flight, within reach of any visitor, joined the swimming spots, the walks, the golf and the food as part of what a town that managed to reinvent itself without losing its sierra charm has to offer.

A refuge for artists and writers: Mujica Láinez's 'El Paraíso'

Through the 20th century, La Cumbre and its surroundings —especially neighboring Cruz Chica— became a refuge chosen by Argentine artists, writers and intellectuals, drawn by the beauty of the sierra landscape, the climate and the town's atmosphere of calm and refinement. That cultural magnetism gave La Cumbre an artistic dimension that sets it apart within the Punilla Valley.

The most celebrated example is the writer Manuel Mujica Láinez (Buenos Aires, 11 September 1910 – Cruz Chica, 21 April 1984), descended from patrician Buenos Aires families and one of the great figures of 20th-century Argentine literature. He is remembered above all for his novel 'Bomarzo' (1962), which recreates, in a mix of history and fantasy, the life of a 16th-century Italian nobleman, and which won him the First National Prize for Literature and, in 1964, the Kennedy Prize —which he shared, tellingly, with Julio Cortázar; his work also includes 'Los ídolos', 'La casa', 'Los viajeros' and 'Invitados en el Paraíso', which make up the so-called 'saga porteña', as well as 'Misteriosa Buenos Aires' and the fantasy trilogy completed by 'El unicornio' and 'El laberinto'. In Cruz Chica, three kilometers from La Cumbre, Mujica Láinez set up his house 'El Paraíso', whose Italian-inspired gardens were designed by the celebrated landscape architect Carlos Thays, the same man who laid out much of Buenos Aires's great parks. There he lived his last years, surrounded by art, books and collections gathered on his travels around the world, and there he died in 1984. Now a house-museum, El Paraíso keeps his furniture, his collections and the writer's spirit, and is one of the most appealing cultural visits in the area.

That artistic, restful calling ran alongside La Cumbre's consolidation as a tourist destination in the sierras and, in recent decades, alongside its sporting fame tied to paragliding at Cuchi Corral, a free-flight center so well established that it produced world-class pilots: the Argentine Michel Guillemot, who grew up flying in these sierras, became the first pilot from the country to reach the top ten of the world paragliding ranking. So the town kept adding layers: the English inheritance of the railway, the belle époque air of a sierra resort, the refuge for artists and, finally, the adrenaline of free flight. That combination of elegance, culture and nature is what defines the unmistakable character of La Cumbre today.
