Cerro Castor is the southernmost ski resort in the world, about 26 km from Ushuaia, in Tierra del Fuego. Its extreme position, at the end of the world, gives it one of the longest and most reliable snow seasons in Argentina —usually from June to October— and a draw nothing else can match: skiing at the edge of the planet, surrounded by lenga forests and Fuegian mountains.

Modern and well equipped, Cerro Castor has a ski area with runs for every level, chairlifts, a ski school, equipment rental and services at the base and up on the mountain. The quality and length of its snow are such that even European national teams come here for pre-season training, and the resort has earned an international reputation despite how far away it is.

Beyond the skiing, a visit to Cerro Castor pairs with everything Ushuaia and Tierra del Fuego offer: Tierra del Fuego National Park, cruises on the Beagle Channel, the End of the World Train and the southern landscapes of mountain, forest and sea. Skiing at the southernmost resort in the world is, in itself, an experience few places on the planet can offer.

📖 History of Cerro Castor (Ski resort)

Cerro Castor opened in 1999 as a modern ski resort near Ushuaia, in Tierra del Fuego. 🗺️ What to see

1
Runs and ski area
32 runs, 600 skiable hectares and 12 lifts at the southernmost ski resort in the world.
Cerro Castor has a 600-hectare ski area with 32 runs for every level, plus 3 off-piste zones and a snowpark, served by 12 modern lifts. The base sits at just 195 meters above sea level and the summit at 1,057 meters: because of the extreme latitude, you ski here at altitudes that would be unthinkably low in the central Andes, with the forest and the sea in view. There are beginner sectors with a school and demanding descents for advanced skiers. Its great advantage is the quality and duration of the powder: thanks to the southern latitude, the season usually runs from June to October, one of the longest in the country.

📖 History of Cerro Castor (Ski resort)

Origins, formation and what the sources say.

A ski resort at the end of the world

A few kilometers from the last city before Antarctica there is a mountain where you can still ski in October while the rest of the hemisphere is watching the cherry trees bloom: that's the price (or the privilege) of being at the end of the world. Cerro Castor is a relatively young ski resort compared with the classics of the northern Patagonian Andes. It opened in the late 1990s —its opening is usually placed in 1999— just outside Ushuaia, on the Isla Grande of Tierra del Fuego, with the idea of making the most of the exceptional snow conditions this far-southern latitude offers.

Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world, had been building a reputation as an internationally known destination thanks to its 'end of the world' status, its Antarctic port, Tierra del Fuego National Park and the sailings on the Beagle Channel. Winter sports, though, still had room to grow, and the valleys and mountains near the city had ideal conditions: plenty of snow, stable temperatures and a road (RN 3) that made access relatively easy, barely half an hour from downtown.

Betting on a modern, well-equipped resort with quality infrastructure put Cerro Castor on the Argentine and South American ski map in record time. Being the southernmost ski resort in the world became an attraction in itself, adding to the sport the appeal of skiing at the edge of the planet, something no other resort in the southern hemisphere —not even those in New Zealand or Chile— can match in terms of latitude.

Quality snow and an international reputation

Cerro Castor's great strength is the quality and the length of its snow. Thanks to the extreme latitude of Tierra del Fuego, the season usually runs from June to October, one of the longest in Argentina, and Fuegian snow is prized for how dry and consistent it is.

Those conditions, plus modern infrastructure —chairlifts, well-groomed runs, a ski school and services at the base and up the mountain—, earned the resort a reputation beyond the country's borders. Ski teams and federations from various countries, including the northern hemisphere, have used Cerro Castor as a base for pre-season training, taking advantage of the fact that the southern winter falls in the northern summer.

That international profile, unusual for a resort so far south and so recently built, cemented Cerro Castor's standing as a serious, competitive ski destination. Its mix of reliable snow, a landscape of lenga forests and Fuegian mountains, and its closeness to Ushuaia's attractions and Tierra del Fuego National Park turned it into a key part of the end of the world's winter tourism.

Fuegian geography and the secret of the snow

The location of Cerro Castor, in the chain of Fuegian mountains southeast of Ushuaia, is no accident. Tierra del Fuego, at around 54° south, sits directly in the path of humid winds off the Pacific and of cold Antarctic air masses, a combination that produces heavy snowfall and low, stable temperatures through much of the winter. Unlike the resorts of northern Patagonia, where the season depends heavily on year-to-year weather, the far-southern latitude gives Castor more reliable, longer-lasting snow.

The mountain's altitude, modest in meters (its base is at about 195 m above sea level and the summit at 1,057 m), is offset by that extreme latitude: by the geographic rule that the snow line drops the closer you get to the poles, in Tierra del Fuego you can ski at heights that in the central Andes would be snowless forest. That, together with the surrounding lenga and ñire forests, gives Castor a character of its own: low-altitude runs but dry, high-quality snow, in a subantarctic landscape.

These natural conditions are the basis of everything that came afterwards: without that particular geography, there would be no southernmost ski resort in the world and no international reputation. At Castor, Fuegian nature is the real capital.

Growth, modernization and tourism reach

Since it opened in 1999, Cerro Castor has grown steadily. What began as a young ski resort became, in a few decades, a modern complex in constant expansion: the runs and the ski area were extended (today with several kilometers of marked runs for every level), new chairlifts were added —among them the Del Valle quad, opened in the 2025 season, on the eastern slope at the foot of the Viejo Castor restaurant—, along with base and mountain restaurants, a ski school, equipment rental and services for visitors of every level.

This development rode the tourism boom that made Ushuaia world famous. The city, which already drew visitors for its 'end of the world' status, its departure port for Antarctica and its trips on the Beagle Channel and through Tierra del Fuego National Park, found in Cerro Castor the ideal complement for the winter season, diversifying an offering that had been heavily concentrated in the southern summer. The arrival of alpine and cross-country ski teams from northern hemisphere countries for pre-season training —taking advantage of the fact that June to October in Tierra del Fuego is the northern summer— gave the resort an international showcase unexpected for a mountain so remote.

Today Cerro Castor is a key piece of Fuegian tourism and an emblem of Argentine skiing. Its mix of reliable snow, modern infrastructure, a subantarctic landscape of lenga and ñire forests, and its closeness to one of the most singular cities on the planet keeps it among the most highly rated winter resorts in South America, true to its identity as the ski resort at the end of the world. For many travelers, clicking into your skis here —a step from Antarctica, with the Beagle Channel and the Fuegian mountains behind you— is as memorable as any technical descent at the great Andean resorts.
